Objectives of the Seminar [top]

The Staff Seminar (25-27 October) will bring together 50 participants from the field and headquarters to share new information, knowledge and to exchange experience on Global Goals and National Challenges: MDGs, PRSPs and Decent Work and to brainstorm on the next steps.

This will be the third Seminar to discuss the Decent Work Agenda and Poverty reduction Strategies. You may remember the previous two, in September 2001 (a soul-searching exercise across the ILO values and approaches to poverty reduction) and September 2003 (deepening our understanding of the relationship of our strategic objectives and poverty and reviewing our initial experience with PRSPs).

Work has gained momentum since. Political commitments are strengthened with the discussion of the Director General's Reports on Working Out of Poverty and more recently on A Fair Globalization. Comprehensive and integrated country experiences connecting decent work and PRSs have now expanded to include some 15 countries in all regions. Progress is made in building capacities, in the analytical and conceptual work and in developing tools and methodologies for embedding decent work in national poverty reduction strategies.

The objective of the October Seminar is therefore to share new information, knowledge and to exchange experience on these issues between field and headquarters and amongst Regions and to brainstorm on the next steps. This year's seminar will take place in the midst of global mid-term reviews by the international community (UN system, IFIs, bilateral donors) of MDGs, assessment of PRSPs and other numerous initiatives for reinvigorating and scaling-up commitment to poverty reduction. Naturally, we have included discussion of these global reviews in the Programme.
