News Update

June 2002
Elections in Sierra Leone and Kenya

Parliamentary and presidential elections were held in Sierra Leone in May 2002. Nine political parties contested both the parliamentary and presidential elections. The ruling Sierra Leone People's Party led by Alhaj Ahmad Tejan -Kabbah won with a convincing majority. The elections were peaceful. It must be recalled that Sierra Leone was for ten years in serious civil conflict. Trade unions were one of the victims of the conflict. They lost most of their members and the leadership was seriously disrupted and traumatised. Education activities came to a standstill during the conflict, and the role of the role to rebuild the labour movement in general and education activities in particular need no emphasis.
In Kenya both presidential and parliamentary elections are due towards the end of the year.

June 2002
Jailed Trade Union Leader released in Ethiopia

The jailed trade union leader of the Ethiopian Teachers' Association was released from prisons after serving a period of six years. The leader, Dr Taye, was jailed for 15 years for alleged plotting to overthrow the Government of Ethiopia. Dr Taye's release was the consequence of an appeal he lodged with the Appeals Court. A before his release the LIO-EAMAT sent a three-persons mission to visit Dr Taye in prison. It must be recalled that the ILO has been on the fore front in calling for the release of Dr Taye.
